These boards were completely created on a CAD/CAM software allowing for a perfect board to be consistently created without variations in shape. Around 2004, Hyman met Bert Berger and was introduced to his high-tech, handmade surfboard that included balsa rails, and a high-density composite top and bottom.īy early 2006, Firewire Surfboards were making their appearance in the lineup. He became quite involved in the general acceptance of the practice and began to seek his ‘Holy Grail’ of machine-shaped surfboards.
By 1998, Nev Future Shapes was the new name, Hyman’s business was now in the global market, and was producing over 5,000 boards a year with his crew. Starting in 1989, Hyman began to get involved with computer shaping. From here, Hyman began to design blanks for some of the best surfers in the world. Gaining much experience, Nev began to hone his craft and feel for the perfect surfboard. After some traveling Nev changed its name to Nev Surfboards in 1981. Take Charge!įirewire Surfboards has quite a fascinating history thanks to the man behind the boards, Australian shaper Nev Hyman, and has become one of the most well known surfboard manufacturers of epoxy surfboards. In 1975 Nev started Odyssey Surfboards in Perth, West Australia. Built with the flex characteristics and lightweight of Helium Technology, the DOMINATOR paddles like it’s turbo charged and does not track like heavier PU boards with similar dimensions. Dan moved the wide point back to reduce the nose profile, maintaining all of the speed but with none of the top turn drawbacks of retro nose outlines.

I normally look for a round tail to provide smoothness in transition from rail to rail and during turns, but the squash tail is proving to not only have that quality as well, but also a bit more release in the turns.ĭesigned by Dan Mann, and perhaps the most versatile board in the Firewire quiver to date, the DOMINATOR combines a full outline with a thick foil from nose to tail and a 5/4/3 fin configuration.
The concave is the same under the front foot but splits into a subtle, double-barrel and V out the tail in the last 5”. Also, the rails are slightly more refined and performance oriented. The obvious outline change is the tail going to a squash from the round tail.

The DM II is meant to be a clean update of the original with design features that allow it to work well in a wider range of conditions and enhance its performance. The Dominator has been a staple in my quiver, and the Firewire line, since its inception in 2008. The Dominator II is a revisited version that I’m super excited about.
